Spina bifida is an open spine and a neural birth defect that affects the development of the spinal cord. Every day, an average of eight babies are affected by spina bifida or a similar birth defect of the brain and spine.

The disease affects three in 10,000 births in the United States, and about 130,000 people in the country are living with it today. Actress Nicole Ari Parker, who founded Sophie’s Voice Foundation because her daughter Sophie was diagnosed with spina bifida, urges women to not only consume calcium during pregnancy, but to also take 400 mcg of folic acid before conception and three months into pregnancy. Folic acid can reduce the risk of spina bifida by as much as 70 percent. Sophie’s Voice Foundation works to promote awareness of spinda bifida and educate people on how it can be prevented.
