NYC Strategic Alliance for Health
Fourteen NYC elementary schools in North & Central Brooklyn were honored at our Excellence in School Wellness Award for working on creating a wellness environment at their schools. The ceremony was attended by NYC Council Member Dr. Mathieu Eugene, Margaret Kelley of the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President and other community leaders. Schools recevied either a banner, plaque or a certificate for their efforts in creating a culture of wellness.
Additionally, all 14 schools were presented with an academic edible garden donated graciously from the Bird's Nest Foundation's "Ground Up" campaign. This edible garden will be planed in classrooms throughout 2011 and will grow vegetables for students to enjoy during the school year, while earning about the process of food from seed to table. These gardens will also be accompanied by "Veggiecation," an innovative nutrition program that educates and empowers communities to learn about and love vegetables.
