Avis Richards, an award-winning executive producer and director, is the founder and CEO of Birds Nest Foundation, a nonprofit group that produces documentaries, short videos and other media for charitable organizations.  Through her work at Birds Nest Foundation, Avis helps nonprofit organizations to promote their missions by empowering them with critical media tools and strategies.

Avis has produced and directed hundreds of episodes and films for national, local broadcast, websites and events.  Her work has been honored with multiple Stevie, W3, Telly, Davey, and Aurora Awards.  Avis' films often benefit those charities focusing on improving healthcare and education, serving inner-city youth, preventing domestic violence, protecting the environment, and guarding human rights.  Avis launched "The Ground Up Campaign" a National campaign providing indoor edible academic gardens and curriculum  to over 100 classrooms.

Avis serves on the boards of directors for HELP USA, Sophie's Voice, Bat for the Cure, Earth Day Network, and the R Baby Foundation.  She is also a member of the advisory board of Joe Torre's Safe At Home Foundation, Cancer Schmancer, Mobile Movement, HUM News, and Renu Mobile.  An Ambassador for Bicycle for a Day and a Peloton Project member for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Avis exemplifies both leadership and dedication to the community. 

In 2012, Avis is receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Maryland.  In 2010, Avis received the University of Maryland's Nonprofit Industry Impact Award, as well as the Artivist Award for Advocacy and Leadership.

Avis earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland and continued post-graduate studies at both George Washington University and Bank Street College of Education.
